Time Card Calculator
This time card calculator adds up the hours on a weekly timesheet from each day's start time, end time and unpaid break. It splits the total into regular and overtime hours and works out gross pay at your hourly rate, with overtime at time and a half after 40 hours by default.

How the Time Card Calculator Works
- Daily hours = end time − start time − unpaid break. Shifts that end after midnight count into the next morning.
- Weekly hours = the sum of the daily hours.
- Regular hours = weekly hours up to the overtime threshold (40 by default).
- Overtime hours = any hours above the threshold.
- Gross pay = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × overtime multiplier.
Worked Example
Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch, plus Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at $20 an hour:
- Weekdays: 8 hours 30 minutes − 30 minutes = 8 hours a day, × 5 = 40 hours
- Saturday: 5 hours
- Total: 45 hours: 40 regular and 5 overtime
- Regular pay: 40 × $20 = $800
- Overtime pay: 5 × ($20 × 1.5) = 5 × $30 = $150
- Gross pay: $950
Tips
Check your workweek
An employer’s workweek can start on any day and at any hour, not necessarily Monday. Enter the days that fall in your employer’s workweek.
Who gets overtime
Some salaried roles are exempt from overtime under federal rules. If you’re unsure whether you’re covered, the Department of Labor’s overtime page explains the tests.
From gross to net
To estimate the federal income tax on a year’s earnings, use the income tax calculator. For a single shift, the time duration calculator gives hours and minutes between two times.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate hours worked in a week?
For each day, subtract the start time from the end time and take off any unpaid break, then add the days together. Five days of 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch is 8 hours a day, or 40 hours a week.
How is overtime calculated?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, covered non-exempt employees must be paid at least one and a half times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. At $20 an hour, 45 hours pays 40 × $20 + 5 × $30 = $950.
Is overtime paid for more than 8 hours in a day?
Federal law counts overtime by the week, not the day, according to the Department of Labor. Some states have their own overtime rules, including daily overtime, and employers can pay more than the law requires. Change "Overtime after" and the multiplier to match your situation.
Can hours be averaged over two weeks?
Not for federal overtime. The Department of Labor says each workweek stands alone, so 50 hours one week and 30 the next still includes 10 overtime hours in the first week, even though the total is 80.
How do I enter an overnight shift?
Enter the start and end times as they are, such as 22:00 to 06:00. When the end time is earlier than the start, the calculator counts it as finishing the next morning.
Is gross pay what I'll take home?
No. Gross pay is before income tax, Social Security and Medicare, and any other deductions such as health insurance or retirement contributions. Take-home pay will be lower.
