GPA Calculator
This GPA calculator works out your grade point average on the common unweighted 4.0 scale from the letter grade and credit hours of each course. Add your current GPA and credits to see your new cumulative GPA.
Result
GPA: 3.53

Unweighted 4.0 scale. Your school's scale may differ.
How GPA Is Calculated
GPA = total grade points ÷ total credits
where each course’s grade points = grade value × credits. A course with more credits counts for more.
| Letter grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.0 |
| A− | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B− | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C− | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 |
Worked Example
| Course | Grade | Credits | Grade points |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | A | 3 | 4.0 × 3 = 12.0 |
| Chemistry | B+ | 4 | 3.3 × 4 = 13.2 |
| History | A− | 3 | 3.7 × 3 = 11.1 |
| Art | B | 2 | 3.0 × 2 = 6.0 |
| Total | 12 | 42.3 |
GPA = 42.3 ÷ 12 = 3.53 (3.525 rounded)
Cumulative GPA
With a previous GPA of 3.0 over 30 credits: (3.0 × 30 + 42.3) ÷ (30 + 12) = 132.3 ÷ 42 = 3.15.
Tips
Credits matter
A low grade in a 1-credit course moves your GPA much less than the same grade in a 4-credit course. To raise a GPA, focus on courses with the most credits.
How much can one term change it?
The more credits you’ve already completed, the less a single term moves your cumulative GPA. Enter your current GPA and credits to test different grade outcomes before the term ends.
Percent grades
If your grades are percentages rather than letters, check your school’s conversion. To work out a percentage score, the percentage calculator finds what percent one number is of another.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my GPA?
Convert each letter grade to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on), multiply by the course's credits, add up the results and divide by the total credits. An A in a 3-credit course and a B in a 4-credit course give (4.0 × 3 + 3.0 × 4) ÷ 7 = 3.43.
What is a 3.5 GPA as a letter grade?
On the 4.0 scale, 3.5 falls between a B+ (3.3) and an A− (3.7). It's often described as a B+/A− average.
How do I calculate cumulative GPA?
Multiply your current GPA by the credits you've completed to get your total grade points, add this term's grade points, and divide by all credits. 30 credits at 3.0 plus a 12-credit term at 3.525 gives (90 + 42.3) ÷ 42 = 3.15.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA uses the same 4.0 scale for every course. A weighted GPA adds extra points for harder courses, such as honors or AP classes, so it can go above 4.0. Schools weight courses differently, so this calculator gives the unweighted GPA.
Do all schools use the same GPA scale?
No. The College Board notes that schools use different grading scales and cutoffs, and some don't use plus and minus grades. Colleges may also recalculate applicants' GPAs on their own scale. Check your school's scale if your grades are close to a boundary.
Do pass/fail courses count toward GPA?
Usually not. Pass/fail courses typically count toward credits for graduation but not toward GPA. Leave them out here, or enter 0 credits.
